My position to the struggle for Schools in Nigeria to be reopened is clearly based on the #NewNormal we must accept.
Is markets and religious centers safer? Will people from high risk state not find their ways to these social events? Questions I have been challenged with but here is my view:
Neither the church nor market is safe following that people will surely make contact...
For the markets, the methodology employed in our local market I can vote it even of higher risk. The best is to even keep it lockdown but I tell you this bitter truth; if you totally lockdown our markets, many Africans (Not just that poor woman in out Delta State villages who can not feed well even on a good day, but all poor people in Africa) will die of hunger even before they get infected. It will be worse than it was during the civil war (not as if was there sha, just a reference).
Fine, let's protest, let our government feed not all of us but just these poor; then we lost over a trillion and the account generals office to fire outbreak. "Its more expensive to recover lost or looted fund than to earn".
Now to save us the stress, commodity prices are falling (gracefully, i follow the IMF), yet go to buy Garri they will tell you a price that is hyped. If you for instance have a tenant who is in this poor state. Naturally can you draw rent? What is the implication to you?
Except you have no human sympathy you collect that rent and send that man to a hunger v2.0 or because you love God you will let the man be but you will fall to recession.
The equation is not even balanced, we have crime at high rate because of hunger in Africa now we entered a pandemic unprepared. African Union - AU, ECOWAS and Nigeria not even our dear Delta State, did not see this coming. Yes, we have some savings but how far can a man who saved N1,000 say 400days before March 16th 2020, how long can that take him with all the hype in local services, cost of feeding etc even when fuel pump price is dropped.
IMF recorded a great fall in commodities meaning recession await us; today June 4th African CEO's Forum had an online campaign to reoriented every African, CEO or Employee, Producers and Consumers that there will be a new normal #NewNormal after this. It's means, many will even loose their jobs due to recession in businesses. I run an SME and sure you do too, has it been same trade value for you?
In all I believe that's why markets where opened partially (even if most don't follow the guidelines).
Talk of religious centers, am no a pastor neither do I trade religious material but I supposed the partially reopening is following the regulations which the protocol of such social events (including other on going social gathering that has been regulated to hold) will enforce the rules...
Thus, the ushers for instance can enforce; no face mask no entry, social distance and so on.
But how about school, how can you monitor social distance in your campus hostel? our lecture theaters can be monitored (One entrance, sanitations, face mask etc), what happens at the walk way, at the cafe, at the ATM etc and how do we manage our universities and Polytechnics that a class of over 300 students don't even have enough room to accommodate them during lectures, let's say we implement 30 student per class that is we have to build additional 9 class room for just this class.
Let's talk about Primary school (ignoring secondary schools; some communities here in Delta have just one...). How do you enforce regulations on a 5yrs old whom innocently will exchange his/her face mask with his class mate to see if they are of same size. I shared this with a friend yesterday who claimed "I kicked against #ReopeningOurCampus because of my SME". When I asked his view sadly all he said was "abeg leave that thing abi you wan use 2yrs finished your HND program way be say na 1yt remain?" Then I asked again, "is it advantageous for me to be infected (with 50/50 chance of survival, not knowing other side effects if I survive) and finish my HND by 2021 as scheduled or is it much better if I allow public health (as well as mine) to be secured and finish my program probably 2022?" Making my friend the reference point to this question he said nothing again to this but "to stay house no tire you?" He asked me!
My stand is, if public (our) health is at stake, them let measures be brought to check and balance so we can reopen school. Virtual learning, I kick against too (supporting National Association of Nigerian Students - NANS Zone D) because measures was not put in place (cost of data on students, electrical instability, efficiency and cutting of school fees...). Some countries (China) has started school, yes! At what level is the measures in place there?
We should fight for faster development of these measures; health care, infrastructures etc then we can enforce regulations on going back to campus.
Please my dear comrades, like African C.E.O's Forum, we must prepare for the new normal #NewNormal
